You appear to assume a moral individual who takes pride in their own identity is weak. On the contrary, that trait has made the American citizenry and military the most effective fighting forces in history. Yes, we were taught discipline, how to follow orders and to be proud of ourselves as a unit. But, we were also taught to take pride in our own abilities and skills as individuals. It's hard to cut off the head of a unit to make it ineffective when there's usually someone else ready and able to get the job done. We stand together towards a common cause because we recognize it is a just cause not out of blind loyalty to a mob.
