It's not a theory. There are new strains, as these types of viruses are prone to mutate. However, the mutations that survive, pretty much always make the virus LESS deadly. Deadlier strains have a much harder time spreading as they kill people off much faster. If anything, this will serve as an argument to lessen lockdowns

Nah, it’ll be seen as more excuse for lockdowns.

They’ll say shite like “but the vaccine might not work on this new strain!”

These new strains also tend to be more transmissible while being less deadly, but as we all know cases, (rather, positive tests) are all that matters. So more lockdowns, more masks, trust the government, do not question anything you filthy, virus-spreading peasant. Remember we’re all in this together!

But the new strain, if it is able to spread to a significant part of the population, will almost certainly be less deadly.

Your suggested mental gymnastics probably wouldn't work. "Yeah the vaccine might not work on covid anymore since it basically castrated itself creating a castrated new strain of itself that is now the dominant one. It's a bit like cutting the arms and legs off of a serial killer and still running for your life, but yeah we will increase lockdowns".

But they'll no doubt try to come up with something.
