Anyone have any experience with this app? Is it somewhat secure or is there better alternatives out there?

Signal is good. I use it for personal communications, as well as a small patriot group.

It's secure enough - the three letter agencies can see that you're using it (technically, anyone can). But the encryption is considered good enough that they probably can't crack it, unless they compromise your device.
