We shouldn't burn it down unless we've got a candidate we can rally around for a new party. That's what threatened the newly-formed GOP in 1856: their candidate, John C. Fremont of CA lost against the Biden of his day, James Buchanan, and that nearly tanked the party.

Their last gasp was to hold out till the midterms to see if anyone electable would emerge. If Lincoln hadn't distinguished himself in the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, leading to his nomination by the GOP in 1860, the Republican party would've been toast.
