Put simply, there's an entrenched shadow government that is actually controlling things in this country (and probably internationally to some extent). They are comprised of unelected bureaucrats and plutocrat activists. Elected officials are the puppets, and the deep state are the puppet masters. What we see as "the political landscape" is mostly theater. The Dems and establishment Repubs are each other's controlled opposition. The conservatives are supposed to lose gracefully to the progressives, who slowly turn America into a socialist hellscape and eventually create and/or join a totalitarian world government. The purpose of this is ultimately the enslavement of humanity.
This all comes back to communism (like, archetypical Russian "commies" from the cold war). After the WW2 ran it's course, the US and Russia were the two emerging superpowers. However, once the common foe (Germany) was defeated, we immediately turned our sights on each other. The communists began subverting American culture in the 50s.
