No joke, they really view them as a fashion accessories like all their heros in the cartoons wore... honestly there is a thread over on reddit every few days about how people just love to be able to hide their face all day; have them in different styles for accessorizing, etc..
I think a lot of people just want to use them to hide their faces because of low self esteem and poor self image.
