Depending on where you live, if your landlord knows you are splitting rent equally you are not liable for the full amount.

Wisconsin is this way.

If your state is simply pay your portion, and have them sign I O Us for the landlord. Because, it's not your responsibility.

There is no legal recourse the landlord take in you, IF your state is this way.
