Because many of them don’t realize that the people who they put in power feel an obligation to prove their virtue to the world, rather than their constituents. Example: killing fossil fuel industries in the United States while refusing to promote the same in “developing” countries.
It seems to me that liberal politicians believe people in the United States are spoiled, while they work to hurt the interests of the people who put them in power. I really couldn’t imagine a worse group of people to govern.
Where I live (PL), when someone says "liberals" they mean staunch supporters of gun rights, small government, minimal to no taxes - some of these folks being conservative (as in social/moral values), some not (libertarian types)
US "liberals" would be most likely called "social-democrats" or "socialists", "left-wing" or "people's party" ("people's" as in "Polish People's Republic" of the past, communist one)
