I served as a Designated Marksman & got to use a lot of different weapons systems, while my M110 was my favored bit of Kit, in Afghanistan l got to see first hand the problems with wind deflection in mountain conditions .
I do guiding around the world & have for a while now had the Long Range hunting bug so wanted something that could handle most conditions & had outstanding performance in Alpine conditions when hunting Tahr ,chamois etc & upped performance from my usual favorites the 7SAUM ( 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum) & 300 Norma Magnum .
We have built / used a couple of 338 Lapua Magnum over the years but the 338EDG out performs it in the field with lighter hunting weight bullets & in a far lighter more manageable package.
My Custom 300 Norma Magnum set up to my specs for long range Alpine hunting, longest kill to date 878 yards with a 14 -18 mph gusty cross wind.
l wish l had had one as a SDM in Afghanistan,it is one of the greatest performing cartridges l have ever seen in the field & out performs the 338 Lapua Magnum in a far lighter & more usable package .This rifle is phenomenally accurate my favorite hand load l use for hunting shoots 338E -285gr , doing 2900fps into less than 3/4 MOA &they hit like sledge hammers in the field even with large game like Cape Buff,Elk,Bear,Kudu etc
338EDG with my usual guiding Long Range Hunting kit.
I'm a 338-378 guy for my big game and have a 338rcm built on a ti action, carbon wrapped barrel, sitting in a magnesium chassis that I use for my mountain hunting. I only hunt Alaska and due to bears I like having a 338, regardless of where I'm at and what I'm hunting.
Yeh l had a 338-378 while it was a great performer with the 300 grns they do not perform well in the field on lighter game, thats where the Edge shines in a lighter set up.
Great news the Military is finally going with calibres in the new MK22 ASR Sniper/DM systems that work in the field not just on paper with the switch barrels 338,300 norma mag it will be interesting to see what additional options come out later ,l will bet on a 338-378.
I shoot the 280 Barnes LRX out of mine, but I also have a 185gr cutting edge ER Raptor load that does 3700fps. I just haven't shot anything with it yet.
I noticed you user name you might like this pumpkin roller l picked up cheap back at the start of the Chyna Flu panic, when everyone had to have a AR ,the guy wanted to trade it but it was outside the dealers usual stock so he rung me to off load it as he knows l have a soft spot for big bores.
That's a really nice looking Henry, but I'll have to pass on that artillary piece.
I'm more in need of good optics than extra firepower atm. A decent LPVO and likely a Tract Toric for a Bergara HMR Pro in 6.5CM are next on a long list of essential tools.
Make sure you do, we have had a lot of great hunting trips together & as a guide who has handled 100's of male clients over the years, woman are far better listeners to advice & do not whine as much when the going gets hard.
Here this may interest you another trip we just did days before the election -
Elk Hunting in the snow -The Wife joined me on a 3 day Horse Back Hunt ,we ended up in a Snow Storm & she still managed to get a nice Bull after a difficult stalk, with the Custom Rem Model 7 -7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum ,l built as one of my Guide Guns
My Custom Rem Model 7 's l use for a lot of my guiding,my uncle & l built them all in his work shop to my specs -
The 7SAUM ( 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum ) is the bottom rifle & is shown set up with cheek piece l use for when my wife/small client uses it, as she has not got a fat head like me.I have always had a soft spot for the model 7 just about the perfect weight/balance for a hard carry hunting rifle IMO & l have used them to hunt all around the world. The 7mm Short Action Ultra Magnum is a great hunting round as well.
The chyna flu has seen guiding business boom, with everyone wanting to do their bucket list hunts straight away ,but if you are ever heading up in Montana & want to go on a hunt let us know . I love hunting that much l even do it in my own time so if l have a spare space/time , as a Veteran myself l would welcome you along to our Ranch & try to give hubby a bit of encouragement ,all you would have do is get yourselves up here & cover your food.
We are going to be working with a Wounded Warrior program at a Veterans Group l help out at next year ,so have long tried to help fellow Vets where l can & believe firmly in the need for us to encourage more woman into the sport.
Just make sure you give us plenty of notice if you decide to come as l can see with the current bookings the next few years are going to be off the chain with client bookings.
You will like it on the Ranch then. My "office "at my Ranch ,this is what we call our Montana Patriotic Red ,White & Blue on show every day in my 'office' -
Yep as l said in another reply ,l have Guided 100's of men over the years all around the world , woman are far better listeners to advice & do not whine as much when the going gets hard.
335yds with a 338, that’s darn near point-blank range for that caliber. (No, I’m not denigrating her skills, it still takes skill to hit anything with accuracy at that range, just that caliber packs a LOT of joules at that range)
No arguments here ,that is the reason l think this custom rifle combination is IMO the perfect Long Range Hunting kit, capable of everything from close range to 1000 yards +.
During my Military service & Guiding around the world l have used most calibers & this out performs them all by a long way in the field ,l made the longest shot of my Military & Hunting life in the field ,1235 yards on a 204lb Wild Boar with it a couple of months ago .
Nice. I'm a 300WM guy, and the longest I can consistently hit a dinner plate at is 1000yds, which is still hard AF with Leupold glass that only goes to 14.5 (I'm not a fan of high magnification scopes -- I need higher contrast for my old eyes). If I was picking one caliber to do it all, I'd probably go with 338, too.
The 300 is a great hunting round ,very popular with a lot of clients ,l am with you & do not like extreme high mag scopes that have come into fashion of late.
Church & l am not really all that into 'formal' religion , l had just heard one of the teachers who had a lot positive effect on me was fighting cancer & asked for people to pray for him so l went . I am still not into it ,but as my wife is involved in the social groups etc at ours ,l am part of the security team for it so we spend time together at it doing our "thing". The only advice from experience l can give is if you want a Ho go clubbing ,you want someone to settle down for the long haul join mixed sports/social clubs that ,her sister met her guy at a rafting/canoing club that did social trips ,2 of the guys l served with met their wives sky diving ie all like outdoor/excitement /not drug fucked couch potatoes.
Together 15 years we never married until l got back from fighting OS l did not think it was fair on her .
Snow melt river gorge,it was a great experience for the both of us . We have hunted together on every continent on earth, including "Dangerous Game ",many ,multiple times & as a guide for over a decade l do not personally hunt for "book'trophies any more ,she has several top end "book"trophies hanging on our Montana Ranch wall,l am prouder of than my own
Now, how does that work? How do you process a deer if you've only got equipment you can carry in your pack? Don't you end up wasting some of the deer? Isn't that unethical in terms of hunting, that is, you should use as much of every animal you take down as you can?
Did you have to build your own shelters, or like did you bring tents in your packs? Did you bring a hatchett? Did you have to chop up/roughly shape wood at any point?
How do you deal with predators? I know you have guns, but how would you know if a predator sneaks up on you?
Feel free to ask any question you like ,hunting suffers from many ' urban myth ' misinformation one l come across often is people thinking you just go around shooting stuff & leaving it to rot.
To save weight when a long hike back to camp in remote areas, the whole animal is broken down into basically quarters & carried out in the main pack ,l bone the animal out as well so it packs down better & for weight saving .
One of the side benefits of Hunting is because you use them as a tool to enjoy the sport ,a love of great knives is developed , that enable all the work needed to break down a animal quickly. When the meat is back at camp it is wrapped in a full-sized cheesecloth bags or bags of similar material to protect the meat from bugs & hung in a cool shady spot . This deer was taken on the third day of the hunt so with the meat properly hung it proved fantastic meals for months to come,we are hunting above the snow line so the temperatures are perfect for hanging meat.
I normally carry 2 good knives & a hatchet into camp & hunt with the smaller of the 2 knives only carried .We carry top of the line hiking tents designed for Alpine conditions ,same as our sleeping gear etc.
If we are hunting in Bear country l carry a Glock 10mm in what is known as a custom guide holster it sits either across your chest for quick access with a pack on etc or as a shoulder rig, as a guide that uses pack horses for a lot of our remote Elk hunts l have had 2 dicey encounters with Grizzly over a Decade of guiding & many false charges ,the weapons were used only in the 2 committed attacks ,l normally also carry a custom shotgun largely based off my experience using them in combat during raids in Afghanistan ,we call it the Bear Trap in a saddle scabbard..
Wow, just wow. Well done Pede.
338 edge is a pretty obscure round. What landed you on that round? Sounds like an awesome trip.

Wilderness hunt, Insert - Xtract via Helo,
Crisp air, no motorized disturbances or multi-hunter game disruptions.
Serenity of space and the shared resolve of the hunt. In place sectioning/securing of the meat.. Small bits on stick over fire and open night sky..
Happy Anniversary INDEED.
