He has stuck his neck out and made more based and controversial statements than most other legislators. The left absolutely hates him, he pisses them off damn near as much as Trump does, in some cases.
That being said, I think he'd make an excellent figurehead for the Lion Party at some point, as long as he doesn't lose his shitposting edge or "mellow out" in any way. Also, he could use a bow tie and an even more aggravating haircut. Double down on making libs melt down.
