Tucker may very well have been threatened, either directly, or someone in his family. But if that happened, then the right thing for him to do would have been to suddenly "retire."
When there's a truly unbearable system put in place, the right thing for anybody who opposes it is to either fight it internally, or if that's not possible, get out.
When WW2 was over, the first mayor of West Berlin was a Social Democrat who had been exiled from Germany since 1933. Nevermind his political affiliation, at least the guy stuck to his beliefs and didn't sell out.
