The House can vote remotely until January and the Senate was being called back to session. A pocket veto was never going to work - especially as unemployment benefits expired. There was no way over a third of Congress was going to suddenly have a change of heart.
Trump has approved all measures for direct aid to the American people. The pork now has to be separately voted on again. This means cowards like AOC don't get to hide behind the payments as an excuse.
There's now 3 potential outcomes:
-
The pork is passed with some gains towards the more popular Section 230 Reforms & election investigations
-
The pork isn't voted on again
-
Congress tries to shove through a naked pork barrel Omnibus bill with no assistance for Americans. We see which politicians used the assistance as an excuse. Far more potential for this vote to fail
Great perspective. Well see how this plays out. I don't think Trump suddenly got stupid like all the doomers here are screeching.
I have faith that he's still a step ahead of everyone else.
Until Congress tries to pass the other provisions in a separate vote, Trump is only going to dispense money to businesses & American citizens. If they can't get a vote in 60 days, the billions in foreign spending & pet projects won't even be used
For Trump to have successfully utilized a pocket veto, about 100 Representatives and 25 Senators would have to change their minds in less than a week.
You’re confused about how rescission works.
Thanks for that commentary. If true, it would restore my faith that he’s got things well in hand given that cards he’s been dealt.
No, they don’t have to vote on the pork again. The default, if they don’t vote, is for the entire bill to pass. They must vote to remove the pork for it to be removed. Which would require a majority in each house. Not going to happen. The best you can say is that this brings more public attention to the pork.
Yet, does not the clock run out on this bill on the 3rd? IIRC, every bill that has not been completely passed and sent to the WH, dies.
This Omnibus Bill is an incomplete work, as is. Trump sign the acceptable parts, and has given Congress the task of making acceptable. They don't have the option of running a 45 day clock on him...because they don't have 45 days.
They have 7 days - far too short for the law to automatically release the monies.
IIRC, They have 7 days to vote on this, or see it die, and have to renegotiate everything in the next Congress.
Correct me if I misunderstand this...but I think Trump flipped the table around on them, telling them if they want to pay off all their coup friends - they will have to do it in the open, and not hide it behind a Covid relief package Americans need badly.
