I grew up in southern Michigan in the 80's. We used "faggot" exactly the same way. It was used as kind of a hybrid term between jerk and douchebag. I guess you could say the word meant you were gay but it also had more to it than that since none of us even knew of any gay people. I mean, there was 3 channels on TV and even Richard Simmons was in the closet in those days. It just wasn't an issue that was ever around or discussed by anyone. At least not in my community. So it was more or less just another word.
So, while I think ole' Marshal might have been actually telling the truth there, I also think he's the poster-boy for Faggots.
