I probably won't make many friends here with this post, but I do think it's important to know the context of what was going on when he 'spilled the beans':

  1. The United States was in the Cold War against the Soviet Union. A war that could have easily ended with mankind being annihilated.
  2. The Soviets and Cuba were sponsoring Communism throughout Latin America. They had already gotten Nicaragua and were very close to getting El Salvador, along with moving on Guatemala and Southern Mexico (along with countries in South America, with Chile being an early case).
  3. The DEMOCRATS refused to fund US efforts to fight Communism in Latin America, and beyond that, made it ILLEGAL for Reagan or Bush Sr. to fight them in any way (such as by diverting money). It was due to a combination of the Vietnam War fallout and the overall hatred the Democrats have towards the United States.

So Reagan, not wanting to see the Soviets win and blow us off the map (if necessary), used whatever capabilities he had to help the governments down there fight off Cuba and the Soviets...and this was one of them (selling weapons to Iran was another).

Gary Webb, it appears, was against Reagan and supportive of the goals of the Democrats (Soviet domination of the world...and they would have achieved that, had Reagan and others like him not fought back). He is NO HERO to me.
