National hero is probably a bit of an overstatement but he is a very often used symbol for conservatives. If you're having a conversation with a romanian conservative there's a 99.5% chance they will bring up "Can't we revive Vlad somehow?" within the first 5 minutes.
A Romanian friend of mine told me that it got to the point towards the end of his reign that being impaled became the punishment for even minor crimes (he used the example of jaywalking, but that is probably a bit extreme).
As a Romanian, I'm fairly sure you'd run out of trees and still not have enough stakes...
