Comes down to character. I never did shitty work just because the pay was low. You are educating children afterall... not just stocking store shelves or putting gas in tanks.

Pay was low? 92k for science teacher with 7 years experience with a 80% pension after 30 years for what is pretty close to a part time job is low?

Count up hours worked by a teacher compared to someone in same salary bracket in private industry and you’ll see teachers put in somewhere around 40% fewer hours per year on average

...except the pay is extremely high for teachers with only a 4 year degree. In my county $55K right out of college and 3 months total paid time off, healthcare, and tenure.

That is what keeps me going. But I know so many teachers that try really hard at first, but then realize that their effort is not going to be rewarded. Eventually they just stop caring about going the extra mile.
