A different kind of 'leftist' apparently. Leftist nowadays in America means authoritarianism, censorship, big government. Mexico's prez seems to be more of a classic liberal/libertarian - he values liberty more than anything else.
Mexico has maintained its liberty stance throughout the pandemic leaving its doors open for tourism. They are also planning on legalizing marijuana soon. I think Mexico is trying to capitalize by being at the forefront of the travel industry and for those relocating to bring foreign money into their economy.
Mexico is probably one of the few places where the WTO and IMF can't buy the influence of the office. Mexico's government is controlled by the cartels, who are filthy rich, and I don't think they are in on the rona.
