They are mandated by law and Constitution to be there 2 days a year: the first Monday in December unless they choose another day per article 1 section 4, and the day they officially count the electors in presidential years-- January 6 this year, per 12th amendment. Which happens to be, IIRC, after the new session starts.
Which might explain why NY is still counting votes in one of the house seat races that the R had been winning by a wide margin on election night.
