The argument often is to block puberty until they're old enough to consent to surgery which tends to be around the age of adulthood. Actually it could conceivably be prescribed for a longer time to give them time to "decide what they want to be". There will be some point where there's nothing to block. I'm not sure how reliable information is on puberty blockers. They make it sound like you go into suspended animation and can then resume development later. I don't believe however that people will entirely cease development nor resume and complete normal puberty when off the drugs.
You don't really stop taking medication if you go down that path. You may go from hormone blockers to hormones or give it up and some people keep changing their mind.
The whole thing is a barbaric exercise. Generally though at the moment they're prescribing them now at around 10-11 just before puberty until around 16 to 18 at least. Sometimes longer. There's usually a waiting list.

Both homosexuality and transsexualism were only reclassified in the more recent DSMs to remove the public stigmatization of these groups. It was believed that it was the stigmas that caused the additional depression and other personality & mental disorders strongly associated with them.
However, there has been no change in correlation with homosexuality/transsexuality and additional personality & mental disorders despite the destigmatization of these groups. Supporting and enabling this behavior in children is medical malfeasance. Studies have shown that there is no medical benefit to mental health by allowing hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgeries, and in fact, there is actually increased incidence of CBT required for patients undergoing these therapies and treatments as opposed to those who did not receive them.
Tl;dr hormone therapy and gender reassignment for children should be illegal, and it’s backed up by actual medical studies
Homosexuality is still something that should be classified as an ailment that treatment options should be considered for. If someone is gay and is unhappy with that then they should be able to seek help.
Saying it's not a medical issue at all is actually depriving them. Ironically it's abusing gay people to say they have to be happy with it. The only unfortunate thing is that there is only limited scope for any effective treatment and no surefire solution. It's depriving them of the right to consent to any treatment.
It's already against the Hippocratic oath however to treat them without their consent. It is extremely amoral to treat anyone without their consent so the circumstances need to be very very extreme. If the patient would rather die than have you treat them you are injuring them by still insisting on treating them.
The case with homosexuality has gone from one extreme to another.
Transsexuals are not in the same class a homosexuals. Their condition is potentially far more problematic and it's inappropriate to put them in the same category. It would be like being unable to see the difference between being gay or a paedophile. They're not just different sexualities.
Transsexuals aren't even in the same category because their primary issue is not sexuality. Though they're slightly related to gays, for example men with feminine sexuality and sometimes other associated behaviours and there's some overlap they're still overwhelmingly in a class of their own.
