I'm gonna have to disagree. When I went to Washington I stayed on the Maryland side well within the red zone and I felt perfectly fine. Conversely, every time I went to Virginia I always had the feeling I was about to get shot, even during the day.
It could be just my experience but I think this is backwards. (PS, I'm white in case you were wondering)
Maryland side is ghettos
not so safe for walking around at night >.>

Where exactly? I generally feel safe everywhere in DC during the daytime... but the crime stats don't agree with your perception.
