I heard it stated in the context of a story of a gunner and munitions partner on the deck of a ship. During Pearl Harbor or in the Pacific theater, a Japanese pilot was diving in and the gunner just locked his sights on the plane and fed the entire belt into the plane causing it to crash and miss the target.

The quip from the munitions guys was something like "Jeez Jimmy, you gave him the whole 9 yards!"

I don't have a source though...take it for what it is worth.

No, I appreciate it. I don't think we should pedal disinformation

No need to apologize. Next thing will be someone telling me that baby carrots are just whittled down and there is no such thing as a baby carrot plant.

Small carrots definitely exist although it's possible that commercially they aren't used to make "baby carrots".

No, you were right to post. Facts don't care about u/Friar_Pede 's feelings.

Actually, this etymology is not settled fact. But if you really want to share some interesting conversation about the origin of the phrase, check out this nifty site, which includes the competing theories: https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/the-whole-whole-nine-yards-enchilida.html

You had me at 9 yards of enchiladas.

AgnesDomini 4 points ago +4 / -0

LOL. Definitely would need the portapotties on hand for that scenario...

2
wiombims 2 points ago +2 / -0

And now that you mention it, someone really needs to address the portapotty situation on 1/6. Where my enchilada troubleshooting engineers at?!

Do congressmen have private bathrooms in their offices? Those should work.

It may not be settled fact, but this guy just tries to be a smart ass for this entire article, but clearly comes up with no other reasonable answers. After reading this I am even more convinced that OPs definition is correct.

27 feet should work fine for the initial engagement. I'm currently at 25.9 feet, but expecting a few more feet by the weekend.

They shot that movie in Montreal. I did surprisingly well at the Box Office.
