What's happening is that a lot of oil companies put a lot of R&D into oil extraction, fracking, but one of the byproducts of fracking is natural gas. They produce so much natural gas, many companies can't even give it away. This caused the price of natural gas to drop dramatically, making it super cheap to generate electricity from natural gas generators, so everybody started switching over from coal to natural gas, which gives off far less pollution when being burned.
This is why the free market is the greatest thing that has ever existed. If 20 years ago, somebody told me that the USA would be the largest oil producer in the world, have cheaper energy than ever, and that our emissions would be less than ever, I never would have believed it.
