I can’t get in until the afternoon of the 5th. I was worried about not being able to get into DC at that time, road blocks, whatever. I’ll be coming in from the west so I booked in Arlington. Also the cheapest places I found anywhere near the capitol were around $100. And I only saw a couple of those. And that was on Dec 24. I don’t know which places are decent and my experience traveling is that if you book the absolute cheapest place, be prepared to be staying in a dump or to have some other kind of problem with the place.

Anyway, that’s why, for me.

Understood. The 100/night is what I'm seeing too, but honestly for a room in a downtown that's not bad at all.

Just looked and can see decently rated (+7.0 rating) hotels within a 30 minute walk of the White House for 200 for Jan 5-7. They certainly look better than your average Motel 6.

Yeah, I mean, if anyone sees a $100/night place that they’re comfortable with, or can swing a $200/night place, by all means, do it. That’s good info.

I can’t swing the $200/night. But I picked up what looks to be a very good place for $77/night in Arlington. It looks like the walk to the Lincoln Memorial is about 30 minutes. The capitol building looks closer to an hour, where the action is going to be. Would be nicer to be closer to there.
