Who should I call? I was going to just start out with a random local rep and go from there. As a new homeowner with no kids (and will homeschool later) realizing that public schools dictate the majority of property tax (crazy i Allegheny county), I would like to eventually petition to waive taxes caused by public schools for those not utilizing them. To start, I want to get an idea of where all local (property) taxes are going.

the election fraud shenanigans have inspired me to get more involved in local govt in general.

Depends on where you are.

I'm in CA, where all property taxes are collected by one entity - the county tax collector.

In some areas, property taxes are collected by the county and the school districts.

So search for the county tax collector and/or the school districts.

You should be able to locate duplicate copies of the tax bill(s).

I’m in Texas, so it’s probably different from where you are at, but I get a notice every year starting what my property taxes are. In that notice I get a break down of where the tax is going. So, like you said, the largest portion is going to schools, then the county gets a portion, then the city gets a portion. To go into where that money is spent I would need a budget from each of those entities.

Also has someone who has looked into the same thing you want to do w/regards to forgoing tax for education when you aren’t using the services, you aren’t going to find a lot of support. That said, where you will find support is for a voucher type system where money follows the kid around with the entity the parents choose for education.
