Yes, when they were surrounded by Muslim invaders (despite attempting to get along with them for centuries) a Portuguese trade ship "happened" to crash on their shores. Realized they were fellow Christians and gave them guns. Ethiopia held out against the Muslim invasions and remained a christian country (although the Muslims did eat away at it's outer border and port/sea access over the centuries).
