If anyone is taking the Amtrak to DC please take this into consideration. While riding the Amtrak you can use websites like Railrat to track your trip slightly more accurate than the Amtrak app.

OMG, went on a train from NYC to Miami many years ago. No way would I take the train anywhere again. Fly or drive yourself.

It's not so bad if you have one of those personal rooms they offer.

I used to do the I-95 Amtrak trip once in a while down the east coast.

Freight has the right of way. I got stuck for 12 hours because of it once. Good luck.

You may wonder why freight has the right of way. It might be that 97% of the track that Amtrak runs on belongs to freight railroads. There is a law that is supposed to still give passenger trains priority, but it doesn’t work like that.

Amtrak passengers are required by law to receive preference over freight transportation. Unfortunately, the law is often ignored by the freight railroads that own and control most of the rail lines Amtrak travels over. Freight trains caused 1 million minutes of delay to Amtrak passengers in 2019 – that’s equivalent to 2 years of passengers waiting for freight to go first. https://www.amtrak.com/on-time-performance

What route are you on? It's extremely unusual for an Amtrak train in the Northeast Corridor to have any significant delays due to freight traffic.

I guess this is why:

Amtrak owns only 3% of the 21,400 route-miles traveled by Amtrak trains, primarily on the Northeast Corridor. The rest are mostly owned by freight railroads. http://blog.amtrak.com/2019/05/why-are-amtrak-trains-delayed-by-freight-trains/

I am in AZ, and the Amtrak stops where I am once a week IIRC on Wednesdays. Though it has been delayed more than a day before. Northeast corridor, at least from Boston, used to be fine when I was a kid. Don't know about now.

I travel on cardinal 50 to Indiana a few times a year from Chicago. I’ve only had one bad delay because of some issue with the train, or the track I can’t remember

The Northeast Corridor is often delayed due to s---ty infrastructure in New York, especially around NYC that habitually breaks. It will never get fixed because crooks like Cuomo and de Blasio keep stealing the funds.

Amtrak is so incredibly out of date. Our railways are a joke.

Our passenger trains are a joke and both passenger and freight share the same rails. I know most people don't care but if we didn't give everyone other than ourselves money we could be surpassing the world.
