But that is not what you wrote, you wrote: "I can only imagine how bad a lot of us would seem to others if our past was held against us, [...]" , which is about others. And your past should definitely be held both for and against you, just like your later actions should be held for and against you. Did you genuinely repent and seek genuine, meaningful forgiveness? Then that should be held for you. But the worse things one did, the extremely much more difficult it is to genuinely repent.
I have as well, and there are many people who have done terrible things who have turned a new leaf after coming to Christ so I wouldn't hold their past against them.
