This isn't even getting into the epistemological problems and other philosophical issues of science of which 99% of the science-worshipping plebs are totally unaware. If it's not producing immediately-testable technology, most of it may as well be cam-whoring. They get paid to spin stories to "make sense" of carefully-selected data and then have a circle jerk over it, winning prestige in their self-created societies and maybe even in the world at large.

Look at Polaris. We can't even get a true distance measurement from a nearby star. We really don't know interstellar distances as much as the public is led to believe.
