According to the cdc's own numbers, covid-19 is less dangerous than the seasonal flu for people under 50. People over 70 are at risk, and people over 85 are at significant risk.

If the all-cause fatality rates aren't going up, then covid-19 is simply "stealing" deaths from other causes. And those deaths are not premature or ahead of schedule, because again, total deaths are not going up.
