We're not living in East Germany yet. Your CA driver's license and registration is good in all 50 states, your insurance should be as well. No state IDs (yet) and travel papers haven't been forced on us (yet).
As for routes, you have the choice of mountains or desert. Mountains are going to be snow-packed this time of year, so unless you're used to driving in it I'd suggest the southern route.
This. I've driven across the country several times and for speed and convenience stick to the south. Major highways have many truck stops with showers and fast food. Blast some tunes and enioy seeing our beautiful country
