In GA the polling pad is the device that they use to check you against the voter roles, not the voting machine itself. I'm not saying this is nothing, just pointing out that it is a different device.

It's bad that you can connect to that device and also a potential problem that it's on the internet (you can actually have devices that are "secure" even if they connect to the internet though, I've had to build them, usually it's one way initiation with encryption and host verification). The issue might be as simple as that it's on wireless for internet and that wireless is insecure, they got into it and can ping it. ICMP ping is two way communications.
That's not good and shouldn't happen but as to the extent of what can actually be done with that it's not entirely clear. Typically, at the very least if you can't hack it you can probably DOS that way at least. That's nearly always the fallback. So you could probably at least disrupt operations there if the machine needs internet to check the voter database and you can disrupt that.
What do the poll workers fallback to? Also that can hinder voting at that location which might be mostly one way or another.

You tend to assume by default in security design that if you can access one node and get inside the network you can reach others but it's not really strictly true. You would be amazed how access may not really mean access. You might be able to get into the staff area at the bank but it doesn't strictly mean you can get into the vault.
There's a good reason why it's still a problem if there's just connectivity. If you can get at the device over wireless, you might not be able to get in but if there are services and things running you can talk to then you have to assume that an adversary may know of an exploit (zero day) you don't. From a security practice point of view you apply that if you can get over the DMZ then you've proven its insecure in certain cases, especially very strict ones.
Access can really mean a lot of things as well. Access to what? The outside of the house, the front for, the letter box or actually in the house and able to do as you like?
