Aren't these the calibration marks that the machine used to "align" the ballot? And if it's off then the machine wouldn't be able to read the bubbles properly? And then it would throw an error and send the ballot for adjudication?

Also, isn't it public knowledge that once a ballot is sent for adjudication, human operators can decide what every part of the ballot gets recorded as?
