Our decisions, the laws we pass, carry the weight of authority, but only when it's with the consent of the governed and that consent is only given when the people have faith that an election was fair and fairly won. Our government's legitimacy and more right, to use state power, is only justified and lawful when consented to by the people or society over which that power is exercised. When an election result is not believed, when people think results could have been tampered with, the people can lose faith in their government. If they do, then the consent to be governed is withdrawn and we have failed the promise of the foundation of our country.
