I think that the last good thing that SNL had was Norm MacDonald doing the "Weekend Update" and after he left at the end of 1997, the show has been unwatchable.
The Simpsons was still great for about another year after that and then started going downhill but at least remains somewhat watchable even to this day unlike SNL.

I gave up on The Simpsons after the first 8 seasons or so. I liked SNL when Will Ferrell was still there, though I hate his movies.
