OSCEOLA, NY - Lewis County Sheriff Mike Carpinelli has announced his candidacy for governor of New York in 2022.

In a press conference held Wednesday morning, Carpinelli said he wants to give everyone a voice, and unify New York State so it can survive and prosper.

Carpinelli says he will run as a Republican. He says the state Republican chairman told him no else has officially announced they are running.

The sheriff, who took office in 2012, says he's been thinking about running for years and wanted to announce his run early in order to give people hope.

"I really want to hear from the people. I'm not going run down there with just my ideas. This isn't about me, it's about all of you out there. So I just want bring some unity back, that's what I want to do. Number one: calm things down, put the breaks on all these laws we are pushing out so quickly. We need to slow things down -take a look at what we already have and decide where we are going," said Carpinelli.

Carpinelli will need to obtain 15,000 signatures on a petition to get on the ballot. He says that process will begin in February 2022.

Incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo has not indicated if he will run for a fourth term.
