You are not far off the mark at all.

The scientific nose, in the main, follows the funding and the glory. I have personally been involved with the bioethanol crap and green energy. My philosophy is to be good guardians of the earth (i.e. no Bhopal, Chernobyl etc.) and to be realistic and honest. I am well known in my field in the world but was pushed out of academia owing to my politics, questioning of bioethanol, and a fight with more senior faculty who essentially wanted the research areas I developed.

Aside from this, these days quantity over quality persists.

This is EXACTLY what people don't understand about Climate "Science". If you want to study anything other than narratives enforcing bullshit - you get no funding.

We need a science purge

It's this way with most intellectual persuit. Papers are funded by private industry, finding of papers always agree with the position of the people providing funding, papers are published in peer reviewed journals, peer reviewed journals are used as the evidence base for university curriculum, private enterprise sets the adgenda for the next wave of intellectuals.

And the cycle goes on. It's how universities have become indoctrination camps for the next generation of corporate and intellectual worker bees.

This isin't how free thought works. It's how they maintain the status quo. Everything universities taught in the 70's is now disproven but everything universities taught in the 2000's will stand until we find a new way of funding independent research.

Correct - the book "Freakonomics" should be required reading for every American! It first exposed the overwhelming impact of putting tons of money into "research" when everyone knows that coming to a conclusion the funding agency doesn't like means you won't get any more grants in the future. All these scientific papers, many of which that have nothing whatever to do with climate science, but all of which have a throwaway line at least of the form "and if X continues climate change will get worse" or "it's possible this <terrible thing 3 million years ago> happened because of climate change" and on like that.
