A public figure has to prove the defamer acted under "actual malice," which is nearly impossible to do. Roberts would have to PROVE BEYOND ALL DOUBT, that Lin Wood KNOWS WHAT HE SAYING IS FALSE.
To do that, he'd need evidence of Lin Wood telling someone that he knows he is lying, but making these allegations to harm Roberts anyway...
Since Lin Wood doesn't make a habit of documenting his intent to lie, it's not possible for Roberts to obtain any evidence... Not to mention Lin Wood is not on Roberts' radar.
Saying that you have evidence that someone illegally adopted children, to use for membership payment into a club is clearly intended as malicious.

Settlements aren't public and they are certainly not in the millions. Probably tens of thousands for each one. Wood has almost had suits thrown out for asking for ridiculous amounts, so he probably settled for a lot less than even conservative guesses would estimate.
