Lots of stores other than Walmart have self-checkout and I don't see what the problem. It's almost always a helluva lot faster, both in terms of the line and the checkout process.
The problem is the store is requiring you, the customer, to do work for the store without compensation. The last time I looked, requiring someone to work without paying them was called slavery. In theory one could come up with a full cart, scan one item and walk out claiming they are just really bad checking out.

Should you be required to push your cart? Or reach out and pull the product off the shelf? Or bag your veggies with a twist tie?
Or are these 3 things slavery too?
