There are about 4000 recorded 'sub-strains' of COVID-19. It has not mutated into a different virus because it is remarkably stable in human hosts which is further proof that it was designed for a human host (man-made). If it does mutate into a significantly different strain they will need to classify it as COVID-20 or COVID-21 (depending on date of discovery).
ALSO - most real epidemiologists admit that it's not even possible to claim this 'new strain' is more transmissible than any other due to lack of consistent or sufficient data.
