My thoughts exactly. Nobody here is scared of covid. My 70 year old parents had it and kicked it's ass without any medication other than some zinc, sunshine, and rest.
It shouldn't be an issue given the audience going, but absolutely do not try to combat tear gas with a cloth type COVID mask. It will not work and will be worse for you.
I think the best thing about the COVID masks will be that they do sort of conceal the identity of the person wearing them. So, you don't have to worry about your employer recognizing you if you're protesting in DC (in support of Trump) and wearing one.
Oh, I'm sorry pede. Here....I saw this one on ebay. Might have to get them to fed-ex it, but they do still have some for sale, apparently. Also, I've gone into local military surplus stores and bought them there (right before a riot also).

If you get a gas mask, please throw the canisters somewhere to neutralize them or drop them into a bucket of water. This helps those who don't have them.
Remember that tear gas is not actually gas. It is a fine powder. It gets on your clothes and stays there. So wear a layer of clothes that can be washed later. Bring a pair of airtight goggles for your eyes. Swimming goggles work. Once they are on, don't take em off even to unfog them, especially after tear gas starts running.
In a pinch, you can put water on a cloth and breathe through that in tear gas. It is very temporary and far from perfect.
If you find a tear gas canister, you can and should put it into a bucket of water. This neutralizes the canister and prevents it from spreading the powder.
One thing I was considering is that you might be able to breathe tear gas if you first run the air through water. There are a number of tobacco or other plant smoking apparatuses that have this function. It's bulky, and I haven't even seen it done, but it might help out.
