Stay in the South, and do engineering (real engineering, not a flashy bio/green tech focus). And really "do" engineering. Don't just make passing grades, but hone the craft. Maybe accumulate $30k in student loans, max (generally $10k, if you work while going to school). Our students have to take one, maybe two hyper-liberal indoctrination courses, but otherwise are okay. Undergrads generally start at $90k and quickly promote up. Master's and PhDs start anywhere from $120k-$150k, and quickly bump to $200k.
Money aside, the engineering jobs are pretty cush. Low stress, low BS, because if the fuck with you, you just quit your job and have 5 offers within the week.
