Stay in the South, and do engineering (real engineering, not a flashy bio/green tech focus). And really "do" engineering. Don't just make passing grades, but hone the craft. Maybe accumulate $30k in student loans, max (generally $10k, if you work while going to school). Our students have to take one, maybe two hyper-liberal indoctrination courses, but otherwise are okay. Undergrads generally start at $90k and quickly promote up. Master's and PhDs start anywhere from $120k-$150k, and quickly bump to $200k.
Money aside, the engineering jobs are pretty cush. Low stress, low BS, because if the fuck with you, you just quit your job and have 5 offers within the week.
What universe do you live in where in the south, salaries for entry level engineers start at $90k? In the south no less.
Low stress, low BS...
Again, you must live in fantasy land. Engineers are held to account for any mistake they make and held to account for delays caused by unreasonable project management.
I agree that engineering is a worthwhile pursuit but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. It is hard/demanding work.
Defense industry. It's not entirely uncommon for our undergrads to start at over $100k. They work flex schedules, have great benefits etc., hence the desciption, "cush".
I say relatively low stress because while other jobs can make as much money, they typically have a much higher bullshit factor. If you are very good as an engineer, the bullshit factor is low. I don't get called out to work at 2:00AM, I don't have to cover other shifts when people call in, I don't do overtime, corporate doesn't append arbitrary tasks on me, etc. So, by comparison, yeah, low stress/low BS.
