Nah, the explanation is pretty simple there. Funkos are relatively cheap and the people who make them are pretty quick to aquire the licenses to produce Funkos for any moderately popular characters in most any type of media. The combination of these two factors means that if you are a bit of a nerd and want to have something to act as a decoration that also shows off something you're a fan of, Funkos are the way to go if you don't want to splurge.
To give an example: I like the Dark Souls series of video games. As a gift for Christmas one year I was given a decorative statue of a character from one of the games, a nice one not a Funko. I don't know the exact prices, but my casual research at the time showed that the fancier, more detailed statue would have been between five and ten times the cost of a simple Funko of the same character.
That Funkos are indelibly associated with soybois now is unfortunate, because they did provide a very affordable way for fans to 'show off'. And for those who don't get why someone would want to get decorative items associated with movies or games, I'd ask them how much stuff with their favorite sports team's logo on it they had before pretty much every major sport went full cuck-mode. It's the same sort of energy, to me.
If you like Dark Souls you're alright in my book. Had a friend buy those statues, one from Bloodborne and a few Darksouls. Some Asian site and the statues were really well made. It's a hobby for something he likes. Like comics. Like coin collection, stamp collection, etc. Some people screw it up for the rest of the folk unfortunately.
PS I do miss shittydarksouls and dadsouls from Reddit at times.
