Currently I’m working for the family business. I had job offer working for my county government as a marine biologist (passion). They are matching my current pay. This job has better benefits. This job would require me to work more hours in the week. I usually work 7am-1pm and then take phone calls through out the day. This year, we doubled our profits. And I am on track for a big salary boost and hiring another person to take my position. My question is, should I leave the family business for this new job? What would you pedes do?

Nope. would stick with the family business to the end.
My current job allows me to live my passion (fishing) . I can go fish in the afternoons after work every day
No, saltwater
I would stick with the family business, but thats just me and what i would do. Either way wish you the best and a very successful future!
If money is not an issue then what would make you happier? Go with that. Life is short.
Most marine biologists are lefties- if you can deal with that and you have a clear understanding of what the job entails, and feel like you would prefer it, I'd say follow your passion. On the other hand, sounds like you've currently got a good thing going and some security, but the job does not feed your soul. I don't know, only you can decide what's right. A lot of jobs like marine biologist seem to be kind of seasonal or only when a grant comes through. I suspect those kinds of government jobs are often not as secure as other government jobs. But I don't know. Good luck with whatever you decide. What are you leaning towards doing? How much do you hate your current job?
I don’t know. The family business is rewarding. I grew my own territory. Also my work hours are really nice, some days I’m done by noon other days I’m done around 1-2pm. Going back to 9-10hr day is not very exciting to me but the job duties are
So it mainly comes down to hours? Do you think at some point they might start adding on more responsibilities/hours with little increase in salary? Seems like more hours doing marine biology might be way less stressful but those hours you're currently working sound really nice. Any idea of the people you'll be working with? Douchebags can make any job miserable. Hope someone can give you good advice- marine biology sounds cool but your current situation sounds pretty sweet and you're good at it.
Adding more hours? No. No one works past 4pm. Sure we gotta answer phone calls everyday and even on weekends but the main work only takes 3-4 hours to do a day
I’d be next. I’m the only one.
How is the family business doing? What's your future outlook? What's the market niche/is there room for it in the future? From your posts I'm guessing your in sales/growth but not running the business itself, correct?
Yup correct. I do the manual labor, sales, and marketing. Future would be manager, training new hire and closing sales, no manual labor, operating my two territories. Lots of growth involved.
Are you the only one working on the growth ? Guessing you already have a Marine Biology degree and the expertise to jump straight into the position without having to pay for extra education, etc?
I always tell people this... if you even have to debate whether or not to take the position, it's worth thinking about very careful. Make a list of pros and cons of staying with the family business, and the pros and cons of taking the position. Then compare the two.
I also like to use the kidnapping analogy- if someone held a gun to your head and said you had 10 seconds to make a choice between one or the other, which one would you go for?
Looks like I’d be dead in that scenario lol
lol gun to your head aside, what's your gut instinct say?
I have a Marine bio degree and I love that stuff being born and raised in Florida and diving, fishing, swimming almost everyday. But every job in the past I’ve had was the daily grind and felt like i was doing mindless work. This job I have now I’ve accomplished goals by myself and seen my salary grow because of that. But I also feel like I’ll be living the same life my parents had, no choice for me.
Have you talked to your family to let them know about your opportunity yet? and that you would like to give it a try ? you wouldn't 100% leave the family business, would still try to stay involved in the family business, but it's an opportunity to do your passion and you'd like to give it a go? Especially if you can train someone to step in where you are to help keep the business going.
I have. The support my decisions. But Im the type of person who doesn’t quit during a race. This would feel like me quitting.
Family will always have your back. If the economy ever takes a downturn, the other company will have no loyalty to you, you will be just another employee. My two cents.
I’m 30
Well there’s job security for this other position. If they dissolve the position in the future, the county is required to find me a similar job for the same pay
I would say stick with the family they will have your back in the long run. Then again I would say gee that government retirement would be pretty nice. That is exactly why I don't give advice on these kind of things. It is your life and your decision. Do what you conscience tells you to do. If you don't have one those then quick got get one you can't live a great life without one.
Very well established
Stay put
Also the pension plan is really good for the new position
FFS, grow a pair and don't ask complete internet strangers advice about major life decisions.
