The actual combat troops are as conservative as they've ever been, it's the welfare babies that are there for the GI bill that have shifted.

It's not too shocking when a bunch of young kids see a free ride through everything for "serving" for 4 years while doing nothing but sitting on a base.

Yup. Those rear echelon types who shit themselves in fear over the idea of combat in a war their own "elected" politicians wanted and started. "Let the conservatives do the actual fighting while I'm safe and sound, far from the heat." Then they try to talk later on about what a "brave veteran" they are with all the paperwork and manual labor they did during X conflict.

In my experience, actual combat veterans tend to be less upfront about what they did, I’d imagine it’s partially due to not wanting as much attention and they don’t want to be reminded as much about some of the things they’ve had to do.

I’ve only ever met one left wing infantry dude and even then he wasn’t a full blown commie, just had some left wing economic ideas he really wanted. Everyone else was fairly right wing, some were way the hell over there too.
