Disagree on the "explosion in life expectancy". The standard vaccines for childhood diseases have reduced child mortality by orders of magnitude, and smallpox vaccine alone saved many lives. "Life expectancy" ie the average of death age rose from 45 or so to 74 now in the 20th century - in my opinion mostly due to antibiotics. I am an example, without antibiotics I would have died at 6 months.
