This was at the beginning of the year, I fish in Alaska, so our office is based in Washigton, therefore that is where our unemployment comes from. So, the fishing industry has a lot of workers that love scamming the system and unemployment and all that, really pathetic stuff, normally just jumping from company to company and faking injuries getting compensated. Normally we can only claim unemployment at the end of the year when the boat is dry docked. Anyways guys figured out they could stay home and say they are afraid of catching covid and draw unemployment plus get the additional 600$ per week. At the peak of all this we were over 1 of 3 shifts short, and ofcourse covid crashed fish prices a lot due to having no restaraunts open, so they guys sitting in their asses were making more money than us working.
Fucked thing is, the company had to allow this due to how maritime laws work, and the industry is so short on workers, these guys will probably be able to return.
Exactly the same at my work. People were getting tested hoping to have it to take time off at government expense. Kind of fucked up! Now that shit is over , watch how few get tested.
