Current New Yorker here: I strongly suspect fuckery too. I'm in Brooklyn (supposedly deep blue) and literally everybody I spoke to locally in the runup to the election (even the black guys) were onboard with Trump and voting Red. That's never happened before. Now this is just one anecdote with a small sample size, and I'm not friends with Communists (there are some to be sure who would never vote Trump), but all of the anecdotes I've seen from New Yorkers say the same thing that things were wildly skewing Red like never before.
Many folks don't understand the level of hatred the Dems Cuomo and DeBlasio earned locally for the bad Chinavirus reaction, the black lives matter extreme overreaction bullshit, and the bad local economic policies this last year. We're seeing many friends and neighbors moving out because of how shit it's getting here. Even people who disliked Trump's personality and policies greatly were voting for him just as a fuck you to the Mayor.
I would not be terribly surprised if New York has also been rigged by crooked machine politics in the city for years and years. I believe that other than the big cities, New York is a dark red state just like PA and most other parts of the country.
