I think the OP is misinterpreting the article.

The 41-year-old Republican underwent two procedures to treat a blood clot that he developed while he battled the coronavirus.

The CCP virus can cause blood clots and other cardiovascular issues. Common treatments usually include anticoagulants for this reason.

Also, he did not die during heart surgery:

The second operation appeared to be successful on Tuesday but he died later that day from a heart attack at Ochsner LSU Health in Shreveport, the paper reported.
