Homer Simpson was similar in the early seasons. He wasn't very bright but he loved his family, tried to be a good father to his kids, worked at a job he hated to do what was right for them and generally had a good heart. A lot of people agree that the show went downhill around the time he became "jerkass Homer" and lost many of his redeeming personality traits while amplifying his character flaws.
